Simulate Early and Often to Boost Profits by 15%

According to research from the Aberdeen Group, (PDF) supplied by ANSYS, best-in-class companies use product simulation early and often in the design process to boost profit margins by 15 percent—three times that achieved by their peers.

Compared to other organizations, best-in-class companies are:

  • 71 percent more likely to use virtual/digital prototypes
  • 64 percent more likely to evaluate different materials
  • 82 percent more likely to document safety margins/quality guidelines and make them readily available to design engineers

The folks at Firewire Surfboards love to surf—and they love technology. In a fascinating partnership with Siemens, the company recently launched a custom board design (CBD) functionality that lets online customers use NX to create a 3D model of the perfect board.

This fits right in with a macro design trend sometimes called ”hyper personalization.” Industry watchers talk a lot about the way consumers are drawn to opportunities to make something uniquely their own, whether it’s choosing a purple laptop cover or creating an online avatar.
