Performance Rewarded: GM Shows Its Love for NX

by Bill Martin-Otto on 15 May, 2012 in NX

Siemens PLM Software was among the 82 global automotive suppliers honored at this year’s General Motors Corp. Supplier of the Year Awards  presentation in Detroit. Their PLM Software provides GM with NX for CAD, manufacturing and engineering analysis; Teamcenter for digital lifecycle management; and Tecnomatix for digital manufacturing automation and simulation.

A global team of GM purchasing, engineering, quality, manufacturing and logistics executives chose the winners. Now in its 20th year, the awards recognize companies that play an important role in GM’s success each year.

In early 2012, GM reported $7.6 billion in 2011 profits, up from $4.7 billion in 2010. TrueCar.com reported that GM increased its sales by over 13 percent in 2011, increased market share by half a point, grew average transaction prices by over $1,100 and lowered incentive spending by five percent.

Part of GM’s recent resurgence from bankruptcy in 2009 involves unprecedented performance in China. GM sold a record 2.35 million vehicles in China in 2010 (more than it did in the U.S.), and the company’s president of China operations expected 2011 growth to be in the 10 to 15 percent range. The carmaker even designs some of its vehicles for the China market first, like certain Buick models and small Chevrolet models. So GM had a lot to celebrate at the most recent Supplier Awards ceremony, held on March 13, 2012 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Siemens PLM Software’s CEO and president, Chuck Grindstaff, was also pretty happy. “After working so closely with the incredible team at GM to thoroughly understand their requirements and deliver the solutions they need to build some of the world’s best cars and trucks, it is particularly gratifying to be named a 2011 General Motors Supplier of the Year,” he said. “We know that understanding our customers and the industries they serve has helped us formulate a unique and practical vision for PLM that has contributed to the unmatched growth and momentum we are experiencing in the global automotive industry.”

With 7 million licensed seats and more than 71,000 customers worldwide, Siemens PLM Software products are used by more than 90 percent of the world’s top 15 automotive OEMs. In fact, Siemens has a hand in the development of more than 80 percent of all the vehicles produced worldwide by all 47 of the world’s top OEMs, as ranked by the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA).
